I teach individuals and employees how to write and edit for the web.

I co-created two courses open to the public: one for the Publishing Training Centre and the other for the Society for Editors and Proofreaders. The former was run successfully for about 17 years, until 2015, and the latter for about 5 years. I was also the sole tutor of a half-day open seminar at Kingston University.

In addition, I create and teach bespoke in-house courses. As well as co-tutoring courses at Pearson Education, the AA and Vet Times Online, I’ve taught, on my own, a series of half-day and full-day seminars at the University of the Arts London and at the Energy Saving Trust in London and Edinburgh. I also taught half-day courses at DK Ltd (London) and the European Central Bank (Frankfurt), a one-day course at Excerpta Medica (Amsterdam), and a two-day course at Weill Cornell Medicine in Doha, Qatar.

These are the sorts of things that I can include in a course:

  • Physical/psychological demands of websites and other digital media
  • Discovering your audience and what they want to do
  • Writing effective web content: words, sentences, paragraphs, pages
  • Editorial house styles
  • Voice and tone
  • Accessibility
  • Structure and navigation
  • Repurposing
  • Content strategy

I’m happy to adapt my teaching to cover any issues that you may have with your website and to use examples culled from your own content.

Very useful overview and introduction to the subject. Notes were all well organised and the exercises were fun and challenging.
Delegate, Introduction to Web Editorial Skills course, SfEP

I thought the leader of the course was very personable, engaging and knowledgeable. It’s quite a technical topic, but she made the course interesting and I took a lot of very sound advice away from it. I also appreciated the fact that she made an effort to really get the whole group involved and interacting with each other.

What I charge for a course depends on where it will be, its length, how many delegates there will be, the sorts of content and the amount of pre-course research that will be required. Contact me for a discussion of your needs.
